Ashraf Cassiem is chair-person of the Western Cape Anti-Eviction Campaign (AEC), based in Cape Town, South Africa. Over the past nine years, AEC has been organizing poor and working class communities against police brutality, poor health services and for decent housing, free water, and free electricity services. Ashraf will share the realities of post-apartheid South Africa, the campaign’s organizing efforts in poor communities, and the obstacles facing social movement-building in Africa.
